Then they do the arithmetic over the life of the house. A mid-grade shingle roof in Ohio is fifteen to twenty years. Metal is fifty. You are not comparing two roofs — you are comparing one roof against three, plus two tear-offs, plus whatever the decking has been doing underneath in the meantime.

What Ohio Weather Actually Does to a Roof
The thing that ends roofs here is not storms. It is the freeze-thaw cycle — dozens of crossings through freezing every winter, each one drawing water into a seam and then expanding it.
Asphalt shingle is a laminated product held together at those seams, which is why it fails on that schedule with such regularity. A standing seam panel has no seam for the water to get into and no fastener through the weather surface to work loose as the metal moves.
The second factor is shade. Much of our service area is heavily wooded, and a shaded shingle roof stays damp, grows moss along the north slope and loses granules there first. Metal simply does not offer moss anywhere to root.
Put together, that is why a metal roof in Southeast Ohio outlasts its rated life more often than it falls short of it.

How long will a metal roof last in Ohio?
Fifty years is the realistic expectation for a properly installed standing seam roof, and the finish is warranted for forty. The shingle roof it replaces is a fifteen to twenty year product in this climate.
What does metal roofing cost?
Roughly two to three times a mid-grade shingle roof, depending on pitch, complexity and panel choice. We quote in writing after measuring the actual roof — not from a satellite image and a square-foot guess.
Can you install over my existing shingles?
Sometimes. A single sound layer over solid decking can be covered, which saves the tear-off. Two layers, or soft decking, means tear-off. We tell you which after we look at it.
Do you do commercial buildings too?
Yes — storefronts, shops and agricultural buildings as well as houses. The systems are the same; the details differ.
How long will my roof take?
A typical house is two to four days. Cut-up roofs with several dormers and valleys take longer, because the hand-formed trim work is where the hours go.
