Two things make Athens County different from the flatter ground north of here. The first is tree cover: heavy, close to the house, and hanging over the roof for most of the year. The second is grade — a lot of properties here have one buildable approach, and everything has to come up it.
Both argue for metal. A standing seam roof sheds needles, leaves and the constant damp that comes with shade, where a shingle roof under the same canopy grows moss along the north slope and starts failing there first.
The catch is that a steep hillside roof is unforgiving of a sloppy install. Panels have to be cut square to a roofline that is rarely square itself, and the flashing at every valley and wall intersection has to be right the first time, because that is where hillside roofs leak.

Athens has three separate roofing markets and they want different things. The rental stock around the university needs a roof that a landlord does not have to think about between tenants — metal solves that, because there is no fifteen-year replacement cycle built into the ownership cost.
The older houses on the streets around the courthouse have the opposite problem: they need a roof that respects the building. Standing seam in a dark matte finish reads correctly on a nineteenth-century house in a way that a dimensional shingle does not.
And out toward Albany, Amesville and The Plains it is farm buildings, additions and outbuildings, where metal has been the obvious answer for a century and the only question is whether it is done well.

Will a metal roof handle all the tree cover around Athens?
Better than shingle does. Debris slides off a smooth metal panel instead of sitting in the granules and holding moisture, and there is no organic mat for moss to root into. You still want the gutters cleared, but the roof itself is far less bothered by shade.
Can you get equipment up a steep hollow driveway?
Usually, and we would rather find out before quote day than on install day. When we come out we look at the approach as well as the roof. On the tight ones we stage differently and adjust the price for it up front rather than surprising you later.
Do you do rental properties for landlords?
Yes, and we can bill the owner directly rather than the tenant. If you have several properties around town, getting them looked at in one visit usually saves on the total.
