Most of this county is forest. Zaleski State Forest alone runs to tens of thousands of acres, and a great many properties here sit under a canopy that closes over the house for half the year.
That is the single worst environment we work in for an asphalt roof. Constant leaf and needle load. Shade that keeps the surface damp between one rain and the next. Moss that roots into the granule mat and lifts the shingle edges as it grows.
A roof under those conditions does not make its rated life, and the failures start on the north slope where the sun never reaches.
Metal is the answer people here reached a long time ago. There is no granule mat for moss to root into, debris slides off a smooth panel instead of sitting on it, and shade is simply not a factor in how long the roof lasts.

Gutters Are the Real Maintenance Job
If the roof stops being the annual problem, the gutter becomes it. Under this much tree cover, a gutter fills faster than most people expect and a full gutter overflows against the wall regardless of how good the roof above it is.
This is one of the few places we work where gutter guards genuinely earn their cost. On an open lot they are mostly an upsell. Under a closed canopy in Vinton County they change how often somebody has to be up a ladder.
We will tell you which situation your property is in. If your house sits in the open, we will say the guards are not worth it rather than selling them to you.
The rest is sizing. Long runs, steep pitches and valleys that concentrate water all argue for six-inch gutter and more downspouts than a builder would have fitted.

Will a metal roof really handle this much tree cover?
It is the main reason to have one here. Debris slides off a smooth panel instead of sitting in a granule mat and holding moisture, and there is nothing organic for moss to root into. Shade stops being a factor in how long the roof lasts.
Are gutter guards worth it on my house?
Under a closed canopy, genuinely yes — this is one of the few places we say that without hesitating. On an open lot they mostly are not, and we will tell you so.
What about branches coming down on the roof?
Heavy gauge steel takes a falling limb better than asphalt does, and more to the point it is still shedding water afterwards where a cracked shingle is not. It is not indestructible, but it fails far more gracefully.
